Distance sampling

Created and tutored by Dr Lucy Tallents, VerdantLearn

Distance sampling course for wildlife conservationists, in three parts: 1. Theory & applications, 2. Analysis with R, and 3. Survey design

Welcome to this introductory online course on distance sampling. This three-part course covers:

  1. The theory behind density estimation of unmarked animals using line transects or point counts, and how this method can be used
  2. How to run and interpret distance sampling analyses in R
  3. What to consider when designing surveys, to ensure you gain insights that help you achieve your conservation goals

Work through the modules below to build your knowledge and skills. Each module takes one week, apart from the Orientation and Wrap Up modules which are designed to be studied as part of their paired modules. Each module has specific learning objectives plus activities to help you achieve them

We encourage you to share your own experience and learning goals, and try applying your new skills during the course to maximise what you get out of your studies

Course assignments

Each week you will be given an assignment to complete, as well as the reading, practical exercises and discussions. The assignment helps you to demonstrate your learning, so that you can earn a digital badge and certificate for completing the course
