Applications of distance sampling
How can we use distance sampling in conservation?
π° Read a research paper or report
If youβre not already familiar with how which distance sampling can be used, this research exercise will help you contribute to our discussion
- Find π a research paper or report that uses distance sampling to assess density or population size, in an area of conservation that interests you
- Read π the abstract and introduction, and make notes π to prepare for the summarising exercise below
The following open access journals are good places to look for papers that you can view and download for free:
- Oryx
- Ecology and Evolution
- Basic and Applied Ecology
- PLoS Biology
- PLoS ONE
- Global Ecology and Conservation
- Perspectives in Ecology and Conservation
If you know of any other open access journals which publish research that applies distance sampling? Or a source of grey literature such as NGO or government agency internal reports? If so, share them in our course discussion area!
π Write a summary
Based on either your own experience, or on the research paper/report you found in the previous exercise, write a short summary (3-4 sentences) to share in our discussion area
Your summary should include:
- What is the overall goal of the conservation monitoring, action or research?
- How does distance sampling contribute to that goal?
π¬ Discussion: Applications of distance sampling
- Contribute your written summary to the discussion on applications of distance sampling. Make sure you include a link if you are summarising a paper or report!
- Read the other contributions, and respond to any that particularly interest you
This discussion exercise is the first half of your assignment on this Theory course. You need to complete it in order to earn a certificate for the course
